Field trip to Tipmosen!

Morgen observation:
Gooood evening, friends of the station! Today we have a speciel read in stock for you. Not just ringing and observing, but also a COMBINED FIELD EXCURSION AND BIKERIDE... But i will get to that in a minute. First up, the morning observation. The weather was more or less the same as yesterday but a bit more southern. 6 meters per second from southeast, a toasty eleven degrees celsius and a whopping visibility of 30+ kilometers!

I started the day of at 7.15 as usual. Today i was alone for roughly the first hour until Anna Beluga joined me. Honestly i dont have a lot to write about today, i had 1100 chaffinches and bramblings (bogfinker og kvækerfinker), some siskens (grønsisken), Linnets (tornirisk), a bit of scoters and some wigeons (sortænder og pibeænder). Later in the day Svend And Svend Åge joined the obs and i took roughly and hour and a half of observation outside of standard time with them. They brought some barnacle geese ( with them when they arrived and a bit of kestrels (Tårnfalke), otherwise nothing much. Anna and I did however enjoy fifty gannets (suler) fishing at the coast, Those are always a beautiful side, and legend goes that it almost brought a tear to Annas eye:)
After i was done observing Mathilde Excitedly asked if i had seen the messengers? I had in fact not checked my phone lately. But look and behold, Svend Dybkjær had called out an subalpine warbler from nyeng, possibly even a Western subalpine warbler (Iberisk sanger) in Tipmosen south of here, Near Ho. Beluga, Mathilde and i hurried to the bikes and off we went. We rode the bike for 15 km against the wind and arrived to the coordinates within 45 minutes. Dybkjær had already left the spot and the only clue we had was and arrow drown in the sand, some coordinates and Anders Myrthue who showed up just before we did. Within half an hour Thomas also arrived. And then came the silence...

Almost three hours of waiting, kratlusking and listening without any birds. No western subalpine warblers, no yellowbrows, no firecrest. Nothing except for goldcrest and bluetits. Around 17 we were about ready to leave, as we had not seen any sight of it. Then Beluga spotted a nice group of seven Red Crossbills (lille korsnæb) in a treetop less than seven meters from us. We all love their parrot like colors and playful nature, so we stood there for a couple of minutes before going home. All in all not a bad day, even though we did not see the subalpine. It might stay here for a couple of days though.

Ringmærkning:
Today was a nice and quiet day in comparison to the previous ones! The wind has picked up and it's only going to get worse from here! However we still managed to catch a nice variety of birds between goldcrests, blue tits, chiffchaffs, chaffinch, robins, and of course some daily blackcaps! We also had a few wrens and a lovely female redstart and great tit, which are always a joy! With not to busy rounds we were able to take out time comparing male and female chaffinches and of course have a good look at the redstart, which is now a little bit out of season as the big numbers have already left the country!
