New arrivals and birds without a net
Today was a special day, it had been storming all night and for the last few days which put the migration at a halt. The weatherforecast promised rain and strong winds (enough to cancel the morning observation). So i did my duty and woke up at 6 am to chech, and look and behold it was indeed raining a lot. So no ringing and no stndardised morning observation. At around 9 it did however die down with the rain. So Gustav and i decided to brace the 10 meters per second and head towards the bunker for shelter! Strong winds bring great fortunes and rare birds blown in from the shore, though typically not large numbers.
Right before we reached the bunker i noticed a common scoter (sortand) who was exhausted from the storm at night. So we went to pick it up so we could give it some nourishment and much needed shelter from the wind that was picking up again. I went to grab the scoter when i noticed a common guillemot (lomvie) only twenty meters from it. So i had Gustav pick up the scoter and i picked up the guillemot. We then called Lua who came with towels to wrap the birds, dry them off and give them shelter.
- A tired guillemot
- Gustavs common scoter
- And Lua helping us safely transport the birds to a quieter area for shelter
Do note that all personel handling birds are licensed to do so, and we only handle exhausted birds as little as possible.
During the short morning observation outside of standard time we also saw a dead baby seal washed ashore, getting eaten by greater black-backs (svartbag). The storm can be a dangerous place, survival of the fittest.
Later Gustav, Mathilde and I went back for another short obs from the bunker (I love windy weather). Not much to be seen, but when we came back Lea and Joakim had arrived. They joined us for dinner and will join us for the morning observation tomorrow. Tomorrows weatherforecast is strong winds from direct west! Great for sheerwaters, stormpetrels and skuas, looking very much forward to that!
Around 16 Anna arrived at the station. She will be joining the ringing team until late october. We are looking very much forward to having her at the station.
As always an interesting day at the station!
