Tits up! Over 20 today!
tirsdag 2. september 2025
Morgen observation:
Hello readers of the Blåvand blog! Today was my first day at the station, and the weather was nice (7 m/s south east). Lots of species at the morning obs, 39 in total, and Sverre showed me the ropes of the different systems for observation. In the first 30 minutes we had a red-throated diver (rødstrubet lom) and four bar-tailed godwits (lille kobbersneppe). The bird of the day is a golden plover (hjejle), because we spotted it during the first couple of minutes, and it stayed with us for pretty much the whole morning observation. We also observed a curlew (storspove), which Sverre was happy about, since he hasen't seen one in a while.
Ringmærkning
After a day of no mist netting because of rain, we had a pretty busy day today! We had a few single birds before the nets started to fill with coal tits! While I was in the ringing lab with Mathilde processing these tiny birds, Lise and Sverre kept running back and forth to unload new tits! This was a great introduction to the station for Mathilde and Gustav, who have arrived yesterday!

After intense 30 minutes of net extractions and ringing, things slowed down from there on, so we had the opportunity to release a few of the coal tits together as a flock, which not only the birds appreciated, but also some light house visitors who had the opportunity to have a closer look! As today numerous flocks of these tiny birds arrived, sparrowhawk activity was quite high too! We wish everyone the best of luck!
