Birds! - local birds...
Morgen observation:

Today was THE day. Low winds, clear sky all night with a full moon shining should have been perfect conditions for birds to migrate and for us to catch them in the morning. I am not sure what went wrong…
Anyway, let’s start at the beginning. When we got up at 4:30 we could see the full moon as it was slowly setting while we set up the nets which have to be up by 5:15 now (sunset is at app. 5:45).
We had breakfast and then did the first net check just as the sun was rising. It was empty. Which shouldn’t worry us too much, since in good conditions birds will migrate until sunrise and we only catch them when they settle down, which can take a little while, up to an hour or two after sunrise.
And then we started catching birds: several whitethroats and great tits and bullfinches and a dunnock. We also caught a couple blackcaps and a yellowhammer, and even a coal tit (which are always around but rarely caught). We caught a lot of species really, we have nothing to complain about. Only there were no migrants. Only local birds.
We even caught a linnet that had apparently found its way directly into our nets on its first trip from the nest, barely able to fly with its wings not fully grown and its tail little more than a stump.
And then, finally, we caught one single redstart. With lots of fat, so definitely migrating, but for the rest – we will never know. We just hope that there are lots of birds still in this country and they just didn’t bother stopping here today because they are all so well fed, but something makes me think that it probably is not so. All over Denmark bird observatories seem to catch less than what they are used to. We hope that this is not a trend that will continue…
Oh, I forgot: we also caught a song thrush. It might be migrating to, if not yet then it will be soon.
