Many firsts of the season

søndag 7. maj 2023
af Amelie Sophie Zeller

The day started cool and windy, until we got a little bit of “Danish Summer” as it got warmer and sunny in the early afternoon, which made us very happy! Also, our wishes from yesterday were fulfilled and it became a good day for morning observations (despite the cold in the morning...).  There were about 5000 Terns (Fjord stars/ Havterne) and also 9 Black Terns (Sortterne). There was only a small number of Red-throated Divers (Rødstrubet Lom), but there was one Black-throated Diver (Sortstrubet Lom), which can be seen only sporadically here.

Henrik also went for a walk in the bog and had a good number of passerines, including a Cuckoo (Gøg) and a suspected Greenish Warbler (Lundsanger). The time of seeing the bird was unfortunately too short to confirm and it is also still early in the season for this species. Today there were also the first swifts (Mursejler) of the season, there were approximately 20 birds.

The ringing was busy, as well. In the first two hours we had already ringed over 50 birds, including a large number of African migrating birds. Luckily, Bent came to join the ringing. After the first two rounds it calmed down again and the number of birds in the nets went down again. But as the nets were opened for 13 hours today, we had 85 ringed birds in total. Highlights of the day was a ringed Trush Nightingale (Nattergal). This species was last seen in hand in 2010, so we were very lucky to have it in the nets today.

Also there was a quite good number of Garden Warblers (Havesanger) and the first ringed Reed Warbler (Rørsanger) of the season.

In the afternoon we prepared the things we need for putting up the fences for the Little Terns (Dværgterne) tomorrow morning.
